ABI launches flexible working campaign to bolster inclusivity

The campaign forms part of the ABI’s new Diversity and Inclusion Strategy which will drive ‘projects and initiatives in a wide range of areas’

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has announced it is launching a flexible working campaign, which aims to improve flexible working opportunities for everyone across the sector and also encourage “more women to apply for senior roles and make the sector a more inclusive place to work for everyone”. 

It comes as research by the group indicates that ethnic minority employees only make up 10% of entry-level positions in the insurance sector – with this figure dropping to 2% when looking at minorities in executive and board-level roles. 

In addition, 29% of women hold board roles in the insurance industry, a figure which has risen from 25% in 2019. 

The campaign forms part of the ABI’s new ‘Diversity and Inclusion Strategy’ which will drive “projects and initiatives in a wide range of areas” – with the group also supporting the 10,000 Black Interns programme by encouraging member firms to sign up and provide internships to young black people in the UK. 

Yvonne Braun, director of long-term savings and protection, ABI said: “It’s encouraging to see the growing female representation at the most senior levels of the insurance and long-term savings industry but much more needs to be done to improve diversity more widely. We need to redouble our efforts to create equality of opportunity in our industry. 

“We’re committed to working closely with our members to drive faster progress and build a truly modern, inclusive sector that attracts and retains the best talent from across society and the communities we serve.”
