North P&I Club, a global marine insurer, has elected James Tyrrell as its new chair of the board.
Tyrrell will succeed Pratap Shirke as head of the 160-year-old firm, with Ioanna Procopiou appointed as the insurer’s first female vice-chair.
A director at Arklow Shipping, Tyrrell commenced his new role on 4 February having previously served as vice-chair of the board.
The group operated with 230m GT as of 20 February 2020, and expects the elections to reinforce its commitment to its growth and diversification strategy.
Paul Jennings, chief executive at the group, said: “Our ability to help members trade with confidence continues to be reflected in their commitment to the club, and so we are delighted to announce a respected figure like James as our new chair.
“Arklow’s long association with North and its reputation for excellence and innovation align closely with North’s core mission to build lasting relationships based on financial stability and continuous investments in people, systems and geographical reach.”
While managing director at the bulk carrier specialist Sea Traders SA, Procopiou is also a member at North.
Jennings added: “Both James and Ioanna are well-known for insightful investments and long-term thinking.
“North is more convinced than ever that our strategy to strengthen our capital base, reinforce our teams and diversify income streams with new products such as the ‘North Hull’ (H&M) cover will continue to attract tonnage to North as a service provider.”
